Opportunities are for Sachem Residents in 6th-12th grade.
Select virtual opportunities are available for Suffolk County residents 6th-12th grade during the months of January, May, June, July, November and December. Must have a valid library card from the resident’s home library.
Teens may complete each project only one time per month. Lead the Way projects change every two months. You must receive approval for your project before working on the opportunity.
Certificates acknowledging any credits earned will be e-mailed as a .pdf document.
Allow one week for the processing of a community service application or certificate.
Celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States by decorating your walkway with colorful, patriotic chalk art! (1 hour)
Help set up, break down, hand out candy and guide families through our life-sized game of Candyland. (4 hours)
Help maintain our Community Garden by weeding, watering, sweeping, pruning, and harvesting. Each session will also include an interactive nature activity. Indoors in the event of inclement weather.
Work with children to build with LEGOS. (90 minutes)
Create baby-themed items for Pronto’s Baby Shower program. (1 hour)
Help our librarians design and maintain the outdoor Patio space, including the gardens, pergola, and other features. We will be weeding and working in the gardens. Dress for the outdoors. (1 hour)
Play chess with a younger buddy. Volunteers must know the rules of chess and how to play the game. (90 minutes)
Work with elementary school students on a simple craft project. (90 minutes)
Help us with projects to benefit local animal shelters and complete various tasks to earn community service credit. Teens may earn up to 9 hours per month for projects completed at home.
You must sign up for the MUTT-I-GREES @ Home in addition to the In-Person Meet Ups. In-Person Meet Ups are for Sachem cardholders only.
Assist the Friends of the library with the set-up and break-down of their book sale.(1 hour)
Assist the library with mud-filled activities for children. Dress for a mess. This program is rain or shine. (2 hours)
Learn important safety practices for traditional bikes and e-bikes. (1 hour)
The Sachem Teen Leaders Club is a year-long volunteer and leadership program for students in grades 8–12. Members provide input on teen library services and events, assist at major library programs like the Summer Reading Kickoff and Haunted Garden, and SachemCon as well as completing leadership activities each month. Teens must attend at least one meeting every three months and contribute 2–4 hours of service monthly. Participation helps teens build leadership skills, strengthen college and career applications, and make positive connections within the community.

Are you ready to lead the way? Watch librarian-selected documentaries and complete a questionnaire that allows you to gain perspective and prompt acts of service in the Sachem community.
By participating in this program you are giving back to your community in the following ways: (1) Becoming informed through documentaries. (2) Actively participating in a dialogue on important issues. (3) Exploring important community issues and spreading awareness by becoming leaders within the community, physically and virtually. (3 hours)
Create either an Instagram Reel, TikTok, or Canva Slideshow about what kindness means to you. (1 hour)
Create a book trailer for teen books at Sachem Public Library. (3 hours)
Submit musical recordings for our TeenStrumentals Podcast on Soundcloud to be shared with the community. (3 hours)
Have you ever wondered what brought you and your neighbors to this very spot? How is this community shaped by who we are and where we came from? Contribute to building a picture of who we are as a “people”. Record interviews with your parents, grandparents, friends and neighbors. Recordings will be shared on the library’s social media accounts. Sign up for more information on this project! (3 hours)
Learn about the library’s databases and gain community service hours by watching one database tutorial video from the Sachem Public Library YouTube channel playlist “Explore Our Databases” and writing a 250-350-word review. Earn 1 service hour for completion of a review, an additional .5 hour is available to those who also create a video review.
Have you rescued a shelter pet and given them a new home? Tell us your inspiring story and why rescuing and adopting a shelter pet is so important. (1 hour)
Love to read? Earn community service credit by reviewing award-winning Young Adult books selected by the American Library Association. You will earn 3 hours of community service per month for a book review that meets all of the requirements. For Sachem cardholders only.
Check with your family before volunteering for a project or with an organization. Some organizations may have minimum age requirements or require training. It is your responsibility to make sure that the community service program you volunteer for will qualify with the organization that is tracking your community service hours. The library is not responsible for tracking community service hours served with outside organizations.
