Community Garden Project
Coming this summer:
Sachem Public Library’s Community Garden Project
Continuing the library’s support of new and innovative educational endeavors and our popular green space initiatives, we are currently in construction of our new Community Garden Project. When completed this summer, this project will transform an underutilized area of our Inside/Out outdoor space into flower, herb, and vegetable gardens. In that same space we will be creating a furnished outdoor classroom and meeting space.
We envision these new planting spaces to be a collaborative environment for patrons of all ages to participate in gardening, food growing, stewardship, and many other green space initiatives. The outdoor classroom will provide a welcoming seating and meeting area for patrons as well as provide the library with additional space for library events, classes, and outdoor meetings.
The project entails redesigning the current landscape into a safe, educational, and ADA compliant space and addresses some ongoing drainage issues. We’ll be relocating some plants and vegetation to other areas on the property, removing some unhealthy trees and reusing our current flagstone walkways.
The library strives to offer our patrons educational experiences of many kinds. Our goal with this project is to spark an interest in gardening and garden stewardship and bring educational experiences to our community they may otherwise not have access to. Funding for this project provided by a combination of grant money and previously allocated funds in the library budget.
