Guests Check in...but Don't Always Check Out
The Hillside Manor AUTHOR: Mary Daheim
Widowed Judith Grover
McMonigle has turned her home into a B&B on Heraldsgate Hill. As yet, the
establishment has not made its mark, but, if nothing else, running up and down
four flights of stairs on a daily basis will help Judith's battle against the
bulge. Nothing, however, can help her deal with her ornery, absentminded mother
and, sometimes exasperating guests. She certainly never intends to get into
the sleuthing business, but when a guest is murdered she figures that it is
bad for business. The murder brings Det. Joe Flynn back into her life-he dumped
her 25 years earlier.
Just Desserts
(Avon, 1991) Tess Darcy, Proprietor
AUTHOR: Jean Hager
An inheritance enables
Tess Darcy of Victoria Springs, Minnesota, to turn her Aunt Iris's Victorian-style
house and gardens into a charming (and upscale) B&B she names Iris House.
She has also inherited a haughty gray Persian cat named Primrose who hasn't
quite accepted her as mistress of the house. On the brighter side, now that
her renovations are completed, Tess has time to turn her attentions to handsome,
Luke Fredrik (he looks like a young Viking in a business suit), chairman of
the Board of the Chamber of Commerce. If only people would stop dying at Iris
House her life would be so simple!
Blooming Murder Avon,
1994. The Hemlock Falls Inn Sarah Quilliam, Proprietor
AUTHOR: Claudia Bishop
With her talent for business,
ex-artist Sarah Quilliam-known to one and all as "Quill"-runs the 27-room Hemlock
Falls Inn in Hemlock Falls, NY, while her widowed sister, Meg, keeps the guests
happy with her culinary abilities. Quill certainly has her hands full with eccentric,
demanding guests, a town of colorful characters who can't seem to mind their
own business, and the annoying habit her guests have of kicking the bucket at
the most inopportune moments.

The Manor House
Lady Elizabeth Hartleigh Compton, Proprietor
AUTHOR: Kate Kingsbury
In World War II England,
the quiet village of Sitting Marsh is faced with food rations and fear for loved
ones. But independent Elizabeth Hartleigh Compton, the last member of her impoverished
but noble family, who owns the Manor House and subsists on the rents she receives
from her tenants, stubbornly insists that life must go on. The villagers depend
on Elizabeth to make sure things go smoothly. Which means everything from sorting
out gossip to solving the occasional murder.
The Pennyfoot Hotel
Cecily Sinclair, Proprietor
AUTHOR: Kate Kingsbury
England, 1906. The Pennyfoot is a luxury seaside hotel in Badger's End that caters to the snobbish upper-crust. Its proprietress is Cecily Sinclair. The only girl in a family of six, her brothers instilled in her an inquisitive mind and a zest for adventure. And since murder is decidedly bad for business, Cecily is only too willing to help out the local constable, aided by Baxter, her faithful but oh-so-stuffy manager.

The PennDutch Inn
Magdalena Yoder, Proprietor

A savvy businesswoman, she has her well-heeled guests clean their own rooms and even help out in the common areas, convincing them that it is part of the Mennonite culture. Helping her run the place are her kinsmen, Mose and Freni Hostetler, who are Amish, and her sister, Susannah, divorced from the Presbyterian she had run off with.
