Anne McCaffrey

Hugo and Nebula-Award-winning author Anne McCaffrey has been writing since the mid-1950s.  Among her most well-known titles is the fantasy/sci-fi series "The Dragonriders of Pern."  In addition, Ms. McCaffrey has written a number of regular fiction titles not listed on this page.

Series


Acorna
A young alien girl is sent off in an escape pod by her parents to save her from their enemies. The pod is recovered by human space miners who name the girl Acorna, because of her resemblance to Earth's mythological unicorns. The series follows Acorna's growth from girl to woman, and the trials and tribulations she encounters in searching for her people.

Brain Ships
In the future, if a child is born with a horribly deformed body but a perfect brain, the brain can be saved. Saved to be schooled, programmed, and implanted in the sleek titanium body of an intergalactic scout ship. They choose a human partner, a "brawn," to share their adventures in the universe, and some "Brain ships" even develop their own unique talents, such as Helva, the Ship Who Sang.

Crystal Singer
Professional disappointment leads Killashandra, a talented singer, to a new career. She decides to become a crystal miner on the planet Ballybran, where "perfect pitch" is a requirement for the work. However, being a "crystal singer" is not as glorious as it sounds. There are many drawbacks, as Killashandra soon discovers.

Doona
In an attempt to escape the overpopulated Earth, a human colony is established on the planet Doona. But the colonists soon discover they are not the only ones living on Doona, and since neither the Human nor the Hrruban governments allow their people to inhabit a planet with another species, one will have to leave. Or, perhaps this accidental experiment in cohabitation can prove that some species can coexist in peace. But peace has many stumbling blocks.

Dragonriders of Pern

The human colonists of Pern find that their new home is more dangerous than they could ever have imagined. Life-consuming "threads" fall from the sky and decimate the planet. To fight the "threads," the colonists genetically alter one of the planet's indigenous species to create fire-breathing dragons. Centuries later, their origins forgotten, the descendents of the colonists and their dragons are still fighting the "threads" in order to survive on Pern. Rediscovering their heritage, they attempt to find a way to rid themselves of the "threads" permanently.

Freedom

Present-day Earth is invaded by the Catteni, who easily defeat Earth's military forces and round up and ship many humans off planet. To discover whether or not the planet later named Freedom is habitable, the Catteni drop a large group of slaves onto the world including Kris Bjornsen and a Catteni male she saved from murder. Now they all, human Catteni and the other alien races, must work together to stay alive on their new home, and find a way to defeat their real enemies, the Eosi.

Petaybee

Yanaba Maddock is sent to the frozen planet Petaybee by "the company" to recover from a poison gas attack that has left her in extremely poor health. But strange things are happening on Petaybee and the company wants Yana to discover the truth behind what's happening. The future of the people, and the entire planet, rests on Yanaba's shoulders.

Planet Pirates

An exploratory mission is launched to the planet Ireta to discover if it is suitable for colonization. A mutiny on the mission forces the rest of the team to enter coldsleep to hide from the mutineers. Awakened years later, the team must outwit the mutineers descendents before they can "steal" the planet for themselves. This "planet piracy" has become rampant in the universe and Lunzie, one of the mutiny survivors, joins her descendent, Sassinak, in an attempt to destroy this network of "planet pirates."
