The most successful film director in history, Cincinnati-born Steven Spielberg(b. 1946) began his big-screen career with the low-budget Sugerland Express in 1974. He had, by this time, earned some postive exposure for his direction of the 1971 TV-movie, Duel, in which Dennis Weaver is stalked by the driver (whose face is never seen) of a huge truck after a minor incident on the road. This was followed by the mega-hit Jaws (1975) and the science-fiction classic Close Encounters of the Third Kind in 1977. He collaborated with George Lucas to create the Indiana Jones films, beginning with Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981). A year later he produced his most popular hit, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (1982), which the director still considers his masterpiece. Among his other films are: The Color Purple (1985), Jurrasic Park (1993) and its sequel The Lost World (1997), Empire of the Sun (1987), War of the Worlds (2005), Munich (2005) and his Academy Award winning Schindler's List (1994). Spielberg won his second Oscar for direction for Saving Private Ryan in 1999.
