Alfred Hitchcock

London-born Alfred Hitchcock (1899--1980) is one of the most renowned film directors in the history of the medium. He became a director in 1925 and made the first British feature film with sound in 1929 (Blackmail). He gained a reputation for films of suspense such as The Man Who Knew Too Much, The Thirty-Nine Steps, The Lady Vanishes, Spellbound, North by Northwest, Rear Window, Dial M for Murder, The Trouble with Harry, Vertigo, and Notorious. Remarkably, Hitchcock never won an Academy Award for his directorship, although his 1940 production of Rebecca received the Oscar as Best Picture and he himself was given a "lifetime achievement" award in 1967. His most famous--if not his best--film remains his 1960 shocker Psycho.

Although he became a United States citizen in 1955, Hitchcock was knighted in 1980.
